Art and History

📍 You are in the heart of the historic city centre where the *Ordinamenta Maris*, the oldest maritime codes in the world, were adopted! Next to our b& b you will find the *Church of the Eucharistic Miracle*, the home of a Jew who in 1495 fried a host flooding the street with the blood of Christ (Padre Pio said "Beata Trani because she was bathed twice by the blood of Christ." I will tell you later the second time. Continuing for a few steps, you will arrive at the *Porto di Trani*, one of the coolest areas of the city. In the nearby alleys you will find the beautiful and mysterious *Church of the Templars* of 1100 from where the crusades started and, just beyond, the *Church of Santa Teresa* of 1600 from which the Saracen pirates stole a crucifix that cursed their ship, causing it to be shipwrecked in blood. Today the crucifix is kept at the *Monastery of Colonna* in the 1000-1100, on a small peninsula on the other side of the city. Along the harbour you will arrive at the majestic 1100 Cathedral of San Nicola Pellegrino, the world jewel of the Romanesque style. Notice that at the top there is not a cross, but a boy on the back of a dolphin: this is how Nicolino arrived in Trani from Greece.
A few steps away is the *Swabian Castle* of 1233 by Frederick II, a fortress on the sea commissioned by Stupor mundis, the highly cultured and visionary emperor who opened Puglia to a thousand cultures, refused the crusades, and wanted, among others, the enigmatic Castel del Monte (it is located a few kilometers from Trani... or on 1 cent coins). Near the Castle there is *the Jewish area* of the ancient city, with the *Synagogue in use oldest in Europe* (1200) and a maze of alleys where you should get lost.
On the other side of the harbour, there is the lush *Villa Comunale* of 1824, an oasis of public greenery, with a bathing beach and a wall that stumbled over the harbour from which capital sentences were carried out in fortunately remote times. The view is still breathtaking.
Below the Villa there is the arm with its *Lighthouse*: at sunset it would also make a stone romantic.
